Abortion is a controversial topic in today's world. One side believes that taking away the right to have an abortion means taking away the rights of the mother. On the other hand people see abortion as the innocent killing of a human being. (p.31 Opposing Views) Roe v. Wade declared the procedure a “fundamental right” on January 22, 1973 (p.7 RoeW. Wade) The mother has the right to choose what is best for her child . Abortion is justified because it may be in the best interests of the family (p.103 Opposing Views). We all agree that no woman should be forced to be a mother. A child should not come into the world unwanted. (Procon.org) 49% of all children come into the world unwanted. (Procon.org) Rates of abuse are higher for unwanted children. If a child feels unwanted or neglected, he or she may be involved in illegal or dangerous activities. The lack of love from their parents can push them to associate with groups of negative people. All children should grow up in a financially stable home. If parents are unable to provide financially for their child, they may feel like unfit parents. (Procon.org) They argue that pregnant women will have illegal abortions if legal options are not allowed. (Prochoice.org) Having a child is a major lifelong decision that requires planning and preparation. Personality begins at birth, not at conception. (Procon.org) Abortion is the termination of a pregnancy, not a child. (Procon.org)A baby is not fully developed until the third trimester of pregnancy. Abortion is a personal and private decision of both parents. Carrying a baby with serious or life-threatening conditions to term is too much for some families to handle.
