Topic > Psychoanalytic Critique of the Kugelmass Episode

Three distinct characters found in “The Kugelmass Episode” represent the Id, Ego, and Superego of author Woody Allen's personality. While the character Emma reflects on Allen's desires. Much like the character Kugelmass, Allen experiences several unsuccessful relationships. His most famous relationship was with Mia Farrell, whom he cheated on with their adopted daughter. The way he treated their relationship establishes his need to exchange the old for something new and improved because he cannot find satisfaction. The id describes our needs, desires and sex itself and this can be represented by the character The Great Persky. He is the wizard who has the ability to send Kugelmass into any book he chooses. The cheap Chinese toilet, or time machine, is also the symbol of the Id because of the immediate satisfaction in fulfilling the wishes of Kugelmass. When Kugelmass asks, “Are you sure it's safe,” and Persky replies, “Sure. Is there anything safe in this crazy world?”, Persky's response once again identifies the Id, while Kugelmass' character focuses slightly more on the Ego. Persky doesn't seem to care about anything; He doesn't question any risk involved. Kugelmass's comment to Persky as he waits in the box for his final journey, "Sex and romance... How we feel about having a pretty face," reiterates that the id doesn't care about the consequences, only the reward. Kugelmass wants what it wants, whether it gets to bite it or not. The Ego is representative of the Kugelmass character. He wants to have an affair, but deep down he realizes that he has to keep it from his wife to avoid hurting her. When the opportunity arises to have a relationship with a fictional character, he no longer sees the harm in having a... middle of paper... anything other than a typical New York Jew. His desire to be someone more exotic is more prevalent than Kugelmass's desires. He may feel as if he doesn't possess enough passion and class to be considered one of the greatest authors. He often plays up the comical aspects of life to hide his flaws. The reason for failed attempts in relationships is because he will always be missing something. Through his repeated attempts to fill that void with someone new until something better came along, he continued until he received a backlash from people concerned about his relationship with his adopted daughter. She is his softie which has caused him to lose the respect of many, including his other children. While not trapped in their current relationship, the stigma will always be there and the consequences will always be present in how others see it.
