Environmental Service provides a different and more engaging way of dealing with academic content through the combination of action and reflection. During my experiences in this course I have learned, by serving in the SURF garden, that there are more opportunities for me to give back to the Redlands community. This was my first time visiting the SURF garden and I discovered that they use organic practices such as crop rotation, companion planting, composting and planting green manures in areas to be left fallow or resting. I also learned that food from the SURF farm is donated to promote social equity and that the produce is sold to the campus food management company, Bon Appétit, and a portion is also donated to Redlands Family Services. There are also lots rentable to students, staff, faculty and any campus organization. Through experiential education we take what we learn in the classroom and apply it to the real world. Through our group cooking activity in preparation for our trip to Joshua Tree, I learned for the first time how to use and set up a portable stove. With this learning experience I will now be able to work with and set up a burner and will be ready to use one if needed when I go on other outdoor trips.
