Grant Wiggins was introduced to the reader as an apathetic school teacher with little emotional connection to anything or anyone. Blaze into life without any thought. However, this changes when he begins to develop a genuine interest in Jefferson's mental well-being. As Grant's hardened heart begins to melt in the presence of the naive Jefferson, I begin to resent him less. When Grant buys Jefferson a radio from his own pocket, albeit with some donations from other people, this clearly demonstrates how far Wiggins has come on his path to finding meaning in his life. This is the man who scolded his students for wasting the precious chalk that came out of his pockets. In my eyes, this puts Grant on the path to redemption. This seemingly simple gesture is a monumental step. It's the first big step on the road to emotional connection for both Jefferson and Wiggins. At first this radio seemed unremarkable.
