A level crossing is where the railway crosses a public or private road at the same level. There are many different types of level crossings, including road level crossings for vehicles and pedestrian level crossings for people. All level crossings have some form of protection and users have a responsibility to contribute to the safety of a level crossing. Users must be aware of the danger that may occur in the level crossing area. Users are responsible for keeping themselves or others safe when using the level crossing area. There are three main types of level crossing: automatic level crossing, manual level crossing and open level crossing (Great Britain: Department for Transport, 2006). Automatic level crossings with or without barriers are equipped with traffic lights that display a steady amber light for approximately 3 seconds followed by two flashing red lights when a train approaches (UK: Department for Transport, 2006).
