There are many elements to consider when evaluating the effectiveness of a textbook. In my opinion, of primary importance (from both the student and teacher perspective) is the overall user experience. My initial reaction to first reading the “Cutting Edge Advanced” unit sample was to take an aspirin. The sample drive is dense and intense and felt a bit like wandering through a maze. But after several slower reads, the points appeared and the fundamental principles and techniques for teaching English as a foreign language began to reveal themselves. Presented appropriately for advanced students, the topics and texts are interesting and relevant enough to appeal to all students everywhere. The activities and tasks are varied and progressively challenging. They also ensure that grammar, vocabulary and pronunciation are constantly reviewed and tested, requiring students to use all four skills. It is clear that there is a strong focus on speaking and listening, skills that are of primary importance in using English to communicate effectively, fluently and functionally in the world. Get an Original Essay Overall, there is a good balance between receptive and productive skill practice, and there appear to be extra resources available (audio CDs, grammar references, vocabulary lists) that allow students to review, consolidate, research, and work independently. Without seeing the actual book and the extra material, it is difficult to offer a fair opinion on the overall structure, order and layout. Some of the content feels a little crammed, cluttered, and disjointed, requiring a lot of jumping from point to point, paragraph to paragraph, and page to page to advance and/or access additional information. However, a good teacher with a solid lesson plan would leverage the PPP process to guide, instruct, monitor, and avoid any potential confusion. Before deciding whether to use "Cutting Edge Advanced" with a lesson, I would like to review an example from its "Teacher's Guide". By comparison, at this stage, I prefer Scope & Sequence to MacMillan's textbook, "Global Advanced", particularly in terms of the compelling arguments, intriguing material and amount of detail it offers. His "Teacher's Guide" is clear and engaging and is full of in-depth advice and helpful tips. To come to a final decision, I would have to evaluate one of the “Global Advanced” drive samples to compare fairly to “Cutting Edge Advanced"’.
