To start the lesson, we first discussed both the nature of science and the nature of technology, my conclusion from the discussion was that science deals with with the natural world and has a more comprehensive rather than technological approach, dealing with the man-made world and taking a more applicative approach. There was an activity the class did which was about our eyes, mind and perception, they were shown a couple of pictures which had two different images and everyone was asked what they said within the pictures. For me, the hardest thing was with the lady with the white blanket over her head because it took me a couple of minutes to actually see the other hidden image. After the activity, we discussed what observation versus perception is, learning that things can mean much more than what you thought you saw, people have different perceptions and may think something different than you or someone 'other person. Continuing the lecture, we then studied the three different types of scientific methods that may have been used by scientists in their time: these are; the inductive approach, the deductive approach and the hypothetico-deductive approach. I learned that induction is a valid type of reasoning, so start with observations, once you observe a specific pattern, you can derive a hypothesis and then develop a theory. One example I remembered in class was that of swans, which states that all swans are right, derived based on an inductive method, then along comes a black swan that falsifies the whole theory that all swans are white . This example led to a serious disadvantage of induction because theories based on this type can be proven false at any time. Then we moved on to deductive reasoning, which is based on a premise, a premise is a statement that provides support for the conclusion. Deductive reasoning is the opposite of inductive reasoning, simply because you must first design a testable hypothesis and then observe the results through experimentation. We then moved on to the much more reliable and beneficial approach, which is the hypothetico-deductive method.
